Ram girls lose by wide margin
Greene County Ram basketball fans finally saw the game they’ve been waiting for when the boys topped the PCM Mustangs 76-54 in Monroe Tuesday night. It was the first game of the season in which every player has been eligible to play.
The Rams’ 76 points included a dozen 3-point shots. Junior Tyler Beger, who missed the last seven games, made four and scored 17 points total in the game. Freshman Trey Hinote and junior Thomas Jacobsen, who averages 1.3 points per game, also made 9 points each from 3-point range. Lead scorer Trey Tucker made six of his 23 points from 3-point range.
Unofficially, the Rams shot at 55 percent from the floor, well ahead of their 33 percent season average. That helped put them ahead of their season average in points, which was 57.5 going into the game. The Rams were below their average at the free throw line, making six of 11 for 54.5 percent, below their season average of 68 percent.
The Rams are not a strong defensive team, allowing teams an average of 65.5 points per game. The 54 points they allowed the Mustangs was not only below that average, but also below the Mustangs’ 57.5 point scoring average.
The Rams were behind only once in the game, when the Mustangs had a 10-8 lead with less than three minutes to play in the first quarter. A Beger 3-pointer gave the Rams an 11-10 lead and the Rams were ahead the rest of the game. The score was 19-12 after one quarter and 38-23 at halftime.
The Mustangs came out strong in the second half and their lead scorer Logan Gilman, who the Rams had held to just two points in the first half, scored the first nine points of the second half to narrow the Rams’ lead to seven at 38-31. A Reid Lamoureux 2-pointer for the Rams and an Austin Brown 3-pointer for the Mustangs put the score at 40-34, but that six point gap was the smallest for the rest of the game. The Rams were ahead 54-39 after three quarters and led by as many as 26 points before the final buzzer sounded on a 76-54 win for the Rams.
Helping out the long shooters were sophomore Wade Adcock with six points and seniors Max Neese and Lamoureux with five points each.
The boys are now 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. PCM is now 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the HOIAC.

The girls started well enough and were tied with the Mustangs at eight points after five minutes of play. The Mustangs scored the last six points of the quarter and the Rams were down 14-8 at the end of the quarter.
The Rams’ Onica Delp scored first in the second quarter and narrowed the gap to only four points, but that was as close as the Rams got. The Rams scored on a Nicole Rohner free throw for a 17-11 score midway in the quarter, but the Rams didn’t score again in the half. The score at halftime was 30-11.
The Rams started the third quarter with a seven point run, shrinking the margin to 13 points at 30-18. They scored only two more points and the quarter ended at 37-20. The Rams’ woes continued in a very long fourth quarter in which they scored four points. The game ended with the Mustangs doubled on the Rams at 48-24.
Mustang Kayla Jennings led all scorers with 20 points, nearly twice her 10.9 point average. Hannah Promes led the Rams in scoring with eight points. Nicole Rohner scored seven, Delp scored four, Sunny Mobley and Samantha Hardaway scored two each and Cassidy Adamson scored one point. The Rams’ usual lead scorer, Laurin Lyons, and her father, head coach Dean Lyons, both missed the game due to illness. Junior varsity coach Jeff Lamoureux took the place of Dean Lyons.
Unofficially the Rams made 10 of 47 shots from the floor for 21 percent while the Mustangs made 16 of 50 for 32 percent. The Rams made four of 11 free throws and the Mustangs made 12 of 27. The Rams had decreased their turnovers in recent games but regressed in Monroe with 28. The Mustangs had 15 turnovers.
The Rams are now 2-11 overall and 2-7 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. The Mustangs are 6-6 overall and 6-3 in the HOIAC.
